This competition winning entrant was for the master-planning of this 18.2 ha site for the Sittingbourne Community College, Kent. It is located in the Thames Gateway on the edge of the greenbelt.
The priority for the expanding community school was to develop a flexible and sustainable phased approach to the reconstruction of the whole site, whilst continuing to provide pupils and local residents with a range of uninterrupted services. Along with new school buildings the proposal incorporated staff housing, a healthy living centre, sports and theatrical facilities along with new playing fields and significant landscaping works. The existing spaghetti of organic piecemeal development has been reordered around a new campus heart which opens the college towards the community whilst providing ready access between all parts of the site.
The new playing fields have been laid out and the grounds landscaped in accordance with the planning permission obtained in 2005. Work on the school buildings is in progress and projected to last a number of years.. In association with ACQ Architects
