"Comparisons with a Richard Serra sculpture or a Mark Rothko painting come to mind" RIBA JOURNAL
A discreet frontage conceals a dramatic 17m long continuous multi-level family room, which runs through the full depth of the building at ground and semi-basement level. This area is vertically punctuated by a 6.2m high internal sky-lit courtyard in the centre of the plan. Light floods into all areas from this skylight. The shop front has been acoustically glazed and a new access is provided to the rear garden. At first floor level a rear extension has been cantilevered over the existing fabric, in rusty 'corten' steel to provide an additional study overlooking the garden.
Designed for the use of a large household the family area comprises: hall, living, music, play, dining, kitchen, and laundry areas with garden access, shower and washroom to the rear. Supplementary drawing rooms, bedrooms, dressing rooms, studio, study bathrooms, and all ancillary accommodation are located above.
